Played a bit with max partitioning size, and this looks more like a classic rogue “compactness”:

It does highlight one issue that I have to solve though – the shadowing routine (correctly) doesn’t light the outside corners of rooms since you can’t see them.  That said, the OCD side of me (and, I suspect, a nontrivial percentage of roguelike players) is really bugged by not being able to ‘complete’ the map.  Not sure of an answer on this one yet…
